Brand new film’s creator and you may movie director, Robert Rossen, creates a beneficial multidimensional chess games, to possess mortal limits, anywhere between Johnny, his manager (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), a good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may a great scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose brother (Nina Foch) did from the casino and you will old an effective corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The fresh caustically epigrammatic program, the fresh cast’s suavely regulated gestures from love and you can risk, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you will smartly assertive photographs (together with his political conscience) make this pugnacious but really outlined spectacle an invisible vintage of one’s genre.” [ ten ]

Even though the spot uses a familiar trend, new characterizations was new together with performances adequate so you can overbalance. Unusual digital camera angles appear occasionally so you can heighten appeal and you will momentarily arrest the interest. Solid teamplay from the Robert Rossen, increasing given that manager-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, original copywriter and affiliate producer, including helps with making this a delicate manufacturing.” [ eleven ]

It is generally a question of viewing Mr. Powell undergo their paces fashionably while a giant cast out-of stars and stars offer your traditional help. Evelyn Keyes plays the great nothing woman who brings forth this new finest in your and you can Ellen Drew is the sleek and slinky vixen which will get your toward jams. Thomas Gomez is actually fatty just like the villain and Lee J. Cobb does a special in a position trip since the an exhausted cops inspector whom eventually shuts the fact. A great deal of ingesting and you may puffing is carried out of the most of the alarmed.” [ twelve ]
